Study abroad timeline: from first call to first day on campus

The most common question we hear is also the most important one: how long will this take? The honest answer is 6–9 months from first call to first day on campus, for most students. Here's how those months break down.

Months 1–2: Decisions, not paperwork

The first phase is counselling: country, course, university shortlist, and budget. This is where rushing causes problems later — a student who picks a country in a weekend often discovers in month six that the finances don't add up. Take the time to decide properly.

Months 2–4: Applications and offers

Applications go out in this window, alongside English tests if you haven't taken one. Offer letters typically arrive 2–8 weeks after submission, depending on the university and intake. Apply to a realistic spread — not just your dream university.

Months 4–5: The financial file

Once you accept an offer, the serious paperwork begins: loan sanction, financial proofs, accommodation. This phase takes longer than students expect — banks and landlords move on their own schedules. Start it the day you accept your offer, not the week before visa filing.

Months 5–7: Visa and the waiting game

Visa processing times vary by country and season. Peak intake months (August–September) see longer queues everywhere. A complete file doesn't just reduce rejection risk — it reduces delays, because officers don't need to ask for clarifications.

Month 7+: Pre-departure

Flights, accommodation confirmation, and the pre-departure briefing: what to pack, what to expect in week one, how to open a bank account abroad. Students who use this time well land and start studying; students who skip it spend their first month figuring out basics.

The deadline that actually matters
